Gif Collab: How To Make A Glitch Gif

Let's learn to how to make this thing here:

Tutorial under the cut -->

  • Grab the image(s) you're using.
For this tutorial I'm going to be using these two pictures:
  •  Duplicate the image (only the first one for now)
  • Select random bits of the image with the Selection Tool

  • Go to the Move Tool and drag the transform boxes* to distort the selection.
*Make sure [x] Show Transform Tool is checked in the move tool toolbox!!

  • Select random bits of the image again with the Selection Tool
  • Go to Filter > Noise > Add Noise...
This will add more effect. You can add as little or as much as you want to.

  • Go to the Channels Window and select the red channel.
Repeat steps 4-6 or select the whole picture and shift it to the left or right. Experiment!!

  • You can also use Filter > Distort > Shear for a wave effect.
  • Go back to the RGB Channel and...
    Here you go:

  • Duplicate the main image again 3 more times and repeat the same steps for the other frame.
  • After creating the next 3 frames, duplicate the main image into 3 more layers.
  • Turn all the new layers off except for one and press Ctrl+U (Cmd+U) to open up the Hue and Saturation window.
  • Check the [x] Colorized box and pump the saturation up to 100.
  • For each layer change the hue to Red, Green and Blue.
  • Set the blending mode to exclusion and adjust the opacity for each as necessary.

  • Turn them off, these will be used later.
  • Now we're going to make the frames for the rolling film effect. First duplicate the main image 4 times. Turn off two of them.
  • Take the top image and move it up a little, and take the second image and move it below it.

  • Make a new layer with a black bar. This will go over the intersection. Merge the three layers together.

  • Select the edges of the black bar and add noise.
  • Repeat this for the other two layers, but connect the images at the bottom rather than the top.

  • Duplicate the two new film roll layers and add a Motion Blur (Filter > Blur > Motion Blur).
  • Hide everything.
  • Repeat all the steps for the second image you're using.
  • When you're done glitching up the second image, add a new layer and fill it with black and add noise. (Do this twice)

  • Turn everything off.
  • Go to Windows > Timeline and click Make Video Timeline. Click on the three squares on the bottom left ( [][][] ) to make it a frame.
  • Click the little arrow next to the time on the frame to change the duration to .1 of a second.
  • Make a new frame and turn on the layer you want visible for that frame. You repeat this for other frames to put it together. Arrange the frames in a way you see fit. Do what feels best!

    1. Well if you can't find the selection tool (like me) You can actually just use the Regtanular Marqee tool, it looks just the same. And to select randomly just place them whereevr you please ;P
